Where The Rivers Meet
by Yvette Njoki Waweru
Where the rivers meet
Is the unity of two into one.
Like the Blue Nile and White Nile confluence that forms the River Nile.
Khartoum is their meeting place.
In African consciousness and spirituality, the natural world is sacred, and everything in it has a sacred role in the scheme of Ubuntu - the philosophy of I am because you are. Water is a critical part of this Ubuntu scheme, as without the waters, we humans cannot exist. Our bodies consist of about 75% water at birth, flowing and changing in quantity (and perhaps quality?) over time. We are the waters - I am because you are.
In African consciousness, water holds memory. Maĩ - meaning water in the language of the Bantu people known as the Kikuyu. Ma - meaning truth in the same tongue. Water therefore holds the memory of the truth. Just as water is the earth’s memory bank, a carrier of truth, DNA is the body’s memory bank. Water is essential in DNA stability and function, and they are inextricably linked. The water is the DNA. I am because you are. Ubuntu.
In African consciousness, the union of two into one, is a symbol of unity. Whether rivers or people, the union is aimed at creating a state of harmony for the sake of Ubuntu. I am because you are.
Where rivers meet is the union of two into one.
They have brought war once more to Khartoum.
To create disharmony.
For the waters carry memory.
The water is the DNA.
I am because you are.
